Describe the project and some of the things you learned throughout. Throughout the project I learned a lot about the backbone of the food industry feeding the entire Country. I've gained a lot more insight into how we control the industry with cheap, processed food which is the only possible option for a lot of the population. However I have become more aware with what I am eating, I have grown up with access to healthy fresh food and this has only made me more grateful. I would like to know more about the meat industry and the animal rights surrounding this issue especially with the Covid-19 issue and how this will further affect the food industry.
How did the interdisciplinary nature of this project impact your learning? How did studying food in both classes impact your learning? During this project, especially at the beginning it was hard to stay focused and do my weekly work. As I read more of the book it began to be more interesting especially as it talked about the major recurring issues in our food industry like overeating, especially with cheap unhealthy options. I liked this topic because it is a very relevant thing in the world (especially the United States!) so it was interesting to read about it. Again it was hard to begin my essay because I was feeling unmotivated, but once I started it was good to put my thoughts out on paper for my personal relationship with food and I liked to write about it.
What are your main takeaways from studying food academically? How has your thinking about food changed from before? After heavily studying food in both Humanities, and Chemistry I know a lot more about how food is actually produced, and what goes interesting. I appreciated doing it in multiple realms because there is so much more to it than I thought. After doing things like labs in Chemistry to see what food is actually made of in terms of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates and then taking that into the food markets made it go a lot deeper than just food. Seeing how we also mass produce cheap unhealthy foods as the only option for many people also greatly contributed to how I see a lot of foods.
